IoP COLLOQUIUM "Strengthening the scientific workforce" by Stella Schindler (LANL)

Europe/Amsterdam
Description

Discoveries in fundamental physics and ensuing developments in technological capabilities can make a positive and transformative impact on society. To accelerate progress in these areas, it is critical to cultivate an excellent, innovative, and effective scientific workforce. In this talk, I’ll discuss recent efforts by an MIT Physics Department Committee I led to improve workforce development across four domains:

 - Recruitment and outreach

 - Scientific training and development

 - Workplace climate, support, and retention, as well as

 - Ensuring community-wide involvement in these efforts.

We’ll explore how individual physicists and their departments can effectively assess local workplace development policies, practices, and procedures; set new goals and benchmarks; and make improvements within the constraints of local resources and needs. We’ll also review resources one can typically access from their institution, local communities, and professional societies to assist in these endeavors.
