COLLOQUIUM "Towards a New Flagship at CERN: Charting the Future of Particle Physics" by Juan Rojo (VU)

Europe/Amsterdam
Description

In this talk I provide a personal viewpoint of some the challenges and opportunities that the particle physics community faces as we move towards a possible decision concerning the next flagship project of CERN. Building up on the recent extensive discussions in NL and elsewhere about the ESPPU, I will present some thoughts about the current state of affairs and what can we expect to happen in the coming months.  I will try to convince the audience that particle physics has often chosen the wrong narrative and hence undersold their achievements, and how moving further we should aim to do better. As an illustration, I motivate how as we move to the HL-LHC era we should avoid the traditional dichotomy between (SM) measurements and (BSM) searches that has divided our field since decades. The talk will be informal and hopefully offer ample opportunities to interact with the audience.
