Nikhef Hackathon

Tired of using the same old exploratory talk at the open day? Not feeling connected to the outside world? Always trying to explain exciting physics to friends? After the previous OpenDay you must have a hundred ideas to improve the way we communicate with the general public.

Join DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE and bring your ideas to life

With this hackathon, your imagination comes into play in a sprint-like design event where participants are stimulated to think outside the box. The main focus is to improve the outreach of Nikhef towards the general public, with the open day as a starting point.

Challenge
During a stressful 48 hours period, multiple groups will design a prototype/concept which illustrates what we do at Nikhef. The only limit is your imagination. There is no technological constraints – think mobile applications, web-application, educational or commercial purposes, physics as art, interactive platforms, puzzles for kids…
For example, catching different-flavour particles using virtual reality, making a 3D hologram with computer screens and transparent acrylic, virtual/physical tour through Nikhef with the use of mobile apps, interactive mechanical contraption, physics demonstrations...
Anything could be made possible.

Procedure
On the 20th of December, in the morning after a short introduction, 'Thinkers' are able to present their idea, after which teams are formed and the creativity starts to take an unexpected turn for the better. Work on your idea and present it in a pitch-like (3 min. slides + 2 min. questions) presentation on the evening of the 21st of December. A committee will decide the winning team, which will be announced at the Christmas dinner (22nd of December) and PRIZES will be awarded.

Already got an idea?
Sign up as a 'Thinker' and deliver a 1min. pitch on the 20th of December to gather team members. Got no idea? No problem: you can form groups and generate creative ideas on the spot.

Implementation of the winning idea
The winning concept will be backed up with additional (external) manpower and finanical support for i
mplementation at Nikhef.

No special skills are needed! But don't forget to bring your laptop.

Waiting at the other side,
Katya Govorkova and Daan Rotman
