We are on the doorstep of a new era in scientific research, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into physics offers unprecedented opportunities for progress. With this vision in mind, I propose the establishment of a "Contact Group for AI in Fundamental Physics" at Nikhef.
The primary aim of this contact group would be to discuss ways in which Nikhef (and the Dutch fundamental physics community) can deal with the opportunities and challenges that the establishment of AI in fundamental physics will bring. The group may promote knowledge sharing (e.g. between the nikhef groups), discuss research opportunities, look into funding opportunities, connect us to the AI communities and can help to equip our scientific community with the skills necessary to utilise AI. This would also be an important step towards the fulfilment of Nikhef's strategic plan.
I believe that the establishment of this contact group would not only enhance our institute's research capabilities but also position us better in the application of AI within the scientific community. It will be a necessary investment to help us to remain at the forefront of technological innovation.
