COLLOQUIUM: "Sterile neutrinos and neutrinoless double beta decay" by Jordy de Vries (UvA) [within Theory Meets Experiment]

Europe/Amsterdam
Description

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay, the process where 2 neutrons convert into 2 protons and 2 electrons but no neutrinos, is the most sensitive probe of lepton number violation.  In this colloquium, I will explain why I am so excited about this topic (spoiler: due to the connection to the origin of neutrino masses, the existence of new, so-called, sterile neutrinos, and the wonderful associated experimental and theoretical challenges). The colloquium is the kickoff for an extended theory-meets-experiment meeting in the afternoon.
