Special Nikhef colloquium: Bonn Physics Show

Europe/Amsterdam
H0.08 (Science Park 904)

Description
Dear colleagues, Next week, on Wednesday 20 March, there will be two interesting talks related to the Bonn Physics Show, the first of which is a special Nikhef colloquium, in H0.08 behind the UvA Science Park building. The second is talk at Spui25, downtown. The Bonn Physics Show is a theater-style play which contains around 25 physics experiments, some quite spectacular (a fire tornado, a tesla coil). The show was developed by particle physicist Herbert Dreiner and is based in Bonn. Herbert and his team of students/actors have also performed their show "What's (the) Matter?" at CERN, in Madrid, Lisbon, Bejing and many other places. On 5 and 6 April, the show is coming to the Compagnietheater in Amsterdam for three performances. Next Wednesday, Herbert will be in the Netherlands for preparations and to give two interesting talks: First from 11:00-12:00, Herbert will give a colloquium-style talk about the show itself: what his motivation was for setting it up, which experiments he chose (with some nice demonstrations, both on video and live), and how projects like this, also on a smaller scale, can be used in physics teaching and outreach. This will take place in room H0.08, the big lecture hall behind the Science Park 904 building. Then from 17:00-18:30, Herbert will give a talk at Spui25 (downtown) which will be about science popularization using the Physics Show as an example. The talk will be followed by a question/discussion session about the same topic, moderated by Nadine Böke. You're all very welcome to attend this event as well! Note that (free) reservations must be made for that through www.spui25.nl/spui25-en/events/events/2019/03/the-bonn-physics-show.html. Finally, if you're interested in visiting the show itself, you can visit iop.uva.nl/content/news/2019/03/physics-show-what’s-the-matter.html for further information and to order your (again: free!) tickets. All the best, Marcel Vonk (UvA)
