Description
The mass redistribution during an earthquake generates a perturbation of the Earth’s gravity, recordable before the arrival of the direct seismic waves. This signal has been detected for the first time using the data of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. If these first detections have shown the potential of this technique, a new class of instruments is necessary to implement a new gravity-based earthquake early warning system. Very sensitive gravity strainmeters, able to measure the gravity gradient between seismically isolated test masses, are currently under study and they can benefit from the technologies developed in the context of gravitational-wave detection.
