DESCRIPTION:The LHCb experiment initiated an heavy ion physics program at
the end of the Run 1 of the LHC\, using collisions with the LHC ion beams
but also with a gas fixed target install in the collision region. Since t
hen\, many progresses were made and the potential of the experiment for He
avy Ion physics is still improving. A second upgrade (Upgrade II) of the
detector is planned for the Run 5 of the LHC (starting in 2036) to run at
higher luminosities than currently. The LHCb Heavy Ion physics program w
ill also benefit a lot from  the improvements of the detectors needed for
Upgrade II. I will present the challenges to overcome in the detector an
d software design for LHCb Upgrade II and  the potential of the future ex
periment for the  Heavy Ion physics program.\n\nhttps://indico.nikhef.nl/
