This colloquium is part of the "Landelijk Seminarium @ Nikhef/CWI, Z011" Abstract: The LHC aims at an understanding of electro-weak symmetry breaking and at discovering potential new physics associated to the underlying mechanism. The discovery of the Higgs particle is a great achievement in that respect, but no other new physics has been found so far. Our knowledge on electro-weak symmetry breaking will be discussed from that perspective and new ideas as well and their implications will be presented.
