Description
After 36 years of development, the Red Alignment System NIKhef (Rasnik) has recently been published in JINST. In the ATLAS experiment, some 6000 Rasnik optical alignment systems are fully operational. There are various other applications of Rasnik, also industrial. Now, we are working on the ultimate Rasnik. Simulations suggest the measurement of sagittas and displacements with a precision down to 20 pm. This could be of interest to the instrumentation of seismic sensors used in gravitational wave experiments. This colloquium summarizes the rich history and the various opportunities of this versatile Nikhef instrument.
